Iceland’s Hidden Waterfalls: Discovering Nature’s Quiet Side in Comfort

Explore Iceland’s beautiful, lesser-known waterfalls away from the main tourist hubs. Enjoy a comfortable, personalized journey in our modified Land Cruisers.

Iceland is known for its dramatic landscapes and powerful waterfalls. While famous sites like Gullfoss and Skógafoss are breathtaking, they are often shared with hundreds of other visitors. But there is another side to Iceland—a quieter, more serene side that requires a bit more effort to reach.

At Icy Peaks, we specialize in taking you there. Not just to see the sights, but to experience them with a sense of calm and in absolute comfort.

The Journey Matters

To find the hidden gems, you often need to leave the paved roads behind. For many, this means a bumpy, uncomfortable ride. For our guests, the experience is quite different.

Our signature vehicles are modified Toyota Land Cruisers. Sitting on 35-inch tires, they are built to handle Iceland’s rugged terrain safely and smoothly. But inside, we have prioritized refinement. With an interior finished in white leather, you travel in a clean, sophisticated environment that feels more like a private lounge than an off-road truck.

(Traveling with family or friends? For groups larger than four, we offer the same level of comfort and capability in our 4x4 Mercedes Sprinters or V-Class vehicles.)

Why "Hidden" Waterfalls?

These locations aren't necessarily "secret," but they are often overlooked by the big bus tours. This means you get a more authentic connection with nature. While we can’t always promise you’ll be the only ones there, these spots offer a peaceful alternative to the crowded tourist hubs.

Here are five waterfalls where you can take a deep breath and truly enjoy the moment.

1. Fagrifoss – The Beautiful Falls
Located in the Highlands, Fagrifoss lives up to its name. The track to get here involves river crossings and rough terrain, which naturally filters out most standard rental cars and buses. It is a majestic drop into a green canyon where the silence is usually broken only by the sound of the water.

2. Kvernufoss – The Quiet Neighbor
Just around the corner from the popular Skógafoss lies Kvernufoss. It is hidden in a small gorge and requires a short, gentle hike. It offers a similar beauty to its famous neighbor but with a fraction of the foot traffic, allowing for a much more relaxed experience.

3. Brúarfoss – The Blue Waterfall
Famous for its striking, glacial blue color, Brúarfoss is a photographer's dream. It requires a walk to reach, which helps keep the crowds manageable. It’s a place to pause and appreciate the unique colors of Icelandic water.

4. Gljúfrabúi – The Canyon Dweller
Tucked away inside a narrow canyon near Seljalandsfoss, Gljúfrabúi feels like a hidden chamber. You have to walk through shallow water to enter, adding a touch of adventure to the visit. It is a unique, atmospheric spot that feels worlds away from the open plains outside.

5. Hestavaðsfoss
For those who appreciate the raw, remote nature of Iceland, Hestavaðsfoss is a perfect stop. Surrounded by rugged scenery, it is a reminder of how vast and untouched parts of this island still are.

The Advantage of a Private Guide

Visiting these places on your own is possible, but exploring them with Icy Peaks adds a layer of ease and safety to your day.

  • Timing: We know the local patterns. We try to time our visits to avoid peak hours, giving you the best possible chance for a quiet experience.
  • Comfort & Safety: The weather in Iceland can change in an instant. Your guide is experienced in reading the conditions, ensuring you are always safe, warm, and on the right path.
  • Flexibility: Luxury is about freedom. If you want to stay longer at a waterfall to get the perfect photo or leave early to chase the sun, we adjust the schedule to you.
